We had a great fishing outing with 6 wrestlers & 4 coaches on Tuesday, June 21st out of Manitowoc Marina. Once again Mother Nature cried a lot.
The winning boat was the Mistress co-captained by Jeff Kluever and Jeremy Van Schyndel along with wrestlers Scott Vandeloo & Vince Zornow which had 9 fish. The other boat, 2 The Jobsite, had 6 fish, including the largest, a 16 # King Salmon caught by Tres Leon. This boat was co-captained by Bob Koehler & Steve Mc Daniel and had Ryley Reffke, Evan Hietpas, & Baily Van Handel on it as well as Tres. "Rainbow" Riley Reffke lived up to his nickname & landed a nice rainbow trout.
Fifteen fish were caught in total including rainbow trout, lake trout, coho salmon, & king salmon. The two teams wrestled fish for about 3 hours & were chased off by a storm. At that point 2 The Jobsite was leading with 6 fish to 4 for the Mistress crew.
The weather cleared & the boats went back out. In the " overtime " session the Mistress crew boated 5 more fish & came away with the win by totaling 9 fish.
Another awesome day on the Great Lakes and everyone had a lot of fish to take home for supper.
Thanks to everyone for the use of boats including the 3 "on call" boats of Kirk & Lisa Cichy, as well as Jim Huss, & Ric Mathyss.

The Kaukauna High Wrestling Room has seen some renovations this summer and the biggest change occured this week as a 60 foot long 52 inch high concrete block wall was erected on the open side of the wrestling area. Two 10 foot opening were left on each end to pass through as well as a four foot opening in the center where a padded door will be installed at the same height as the wall. The purpose of the wall is to separate the wrestling/activity area of the room from the corridor/storage area of the room. The next phase of renovation is to create a more forgiving subfloor beneath the mats. Plans for this project are in the works and hopefully will be complete real soon. When complete, the floor beneath the mats will have a hollow, almost bouncy feel to it. The forgiveness of this new surface will be much easier on the body for all activities, especially wrestling. The wall will also provide a containing edge to the subfloor within the room. After the floor is installed and mats back in place, the wall will be padded on the wrestling side for safety giving the room 4750 square feet of soft, flexible space contained by wall padding.
All materials for these projects were aquired through a combination of donations and the Kaukauna Wrestling Club. Former KHS standout wrestler Dave Schoen lead the wall building efforts along with help from Gary and Troy Vanderloop. Dave started on Friday morning and was done before noon on Saturday. Materials were provided by County Materials in Appleton and much of it donated. A big thanks to Dave, Gary, and Troy for donating their time, effort, and expertise to make this happen.
Check out the pictures in the summer 2010 photo album.
Even Mother Nature couldn't stop the Kaukauna Wrestling Team.
We had a very successful day on the Lake, even though it rained so hard we felt like we were in the lake! The trip was shortened to a few hours because of the heavy rains, over 2 inches fell while we were fishing.
Five boats managed to wrestle in 25 fish. The winning boat was II The Job Site captained by Steve McDaniel and his crew of Kyle Rose, MosHawQuit Bartz, and Jonah Gibbin. They caught the most fish, seven, and the largest, a 15 lb. 4 oz. King Salmon pulled in by Jonah Gibbin. (shown above)
One Lake Trout was caught along with a few Rainbow Trout (Steelhead) and many King (Chinook) Salmon.
Boats were from Kirk & Lisa Cichy, Rick Mathys, Jeremy Van Schyndel, Jeff Kluever, and Bob Koehler/ Steve Mc Daniel.
Fifteen wrestlers participated: Alex DeGroot, Trevor Koehler, Scott VanDeLoo, Travis VandenHeuvel, MosHawQuit Bartz, Vince Zornow, Evan Hietpas, Josh Barbara, Ethan Pelky, Riley Reffke, Kyle Rose, Jonah Gibbin, Nick Dercks, Tyler Nelson, and Dan Novak.
It was a great experience for the team and there are a lot of fish stories to be told. I am sure they are all true.
Congrats are in order for Noah Budi, Scott VanDeLoo, and Austin Hietpas.
Noah finished in a tie for sixth overall amongst all junior and senior wrestlers in Wisconsin for the Crossface Newspaper Academic All state team. The top 15 make first team, 16-30 second team, and then honorable mention. This honor is calculated by a formula combing GPA, State Place, and number of wins.
Scott was the #1 freshman and sophomore in the state of Wisconsin! He is the first Kaukauna wrestler to achieve the honor of #1 overall.
Austin was #35 overall for juniors and seniors earning him honorable mention recognition.
Great job by these three well rounded young men.
Dillon Bera ,wrestling for UW Parkside, defeated the #5 ranked wrestler in the nation to win the 157# weight class and qualify for the DII Nationals to be held March 12-13 in Omaha, Nebraska.

Saturday night's scrimmage with Pulaski, Reedsville, Wrightstown, and Xavier was a good night for knocking off the rust in preparation for the regular season competitions just ahead. Everyone was able to get several matches against various opponents. The season is only two weeks young so we expected to see some mistakes, and the things we need to improve on are not really a suprise. We have time before conference and regional tournaments begin and that's when we want to be at our best.
This Thursday we open at home against Oshkosh West. West has good talent throughout their line-up so our young squad will be in for a battle. It will be Parents Night, so all parents of the wrestlers and managers will recieve free admission into the dual after checking in with the passes to be sent home this week.
On Saturday, everyone will compete in a tournament to be determined this week. Our varsity squad will host five other teams in a round-robin tournment at KHS. This year we welcome Franklin to the tournament. Franklin is a program who has been to team state several times over the past decade, and a team who battled us hard at state last year. Teams returning from last year are Ashwaubenon, Hamilton, Valders, and Stevens Point.
We will send the entire JV squad to Appleton East on Saturday where they will compete in an individual round robin tournament with schools from around northeastern Wisconsin.
Please come on out to support the Grapplin'Ghosts on Thursday and at the tournaments this Saturday.

Following the final summer training session this Thursday, July 30, Coach McDaniel Sr.is inviting all participating wrestlers over to 2800 Welhouse Dr. for grilled salmon and other snacks. The regularly scheduled workout will take place from 6:30-8 pm. Directions will be given on Thursday. See you there!
We had a great time on the water again this year on Lake
Michigan.
Coach Bob Koehler had 3 fish aboard II The Job Site with the winning team of Josiah Bobier, Trevor Koehler, Scott Van De Loo, & MosHawQuit Bartz
Coach Steve Mc Daniel had 1 fish aboard The Mistress with the team of Steve Van Wychen, Austin Hietpas, & Cory Heid.
Scott edged out Austin for biggest fish by 3 ounces with a King Salmon that was 14 lbs 3 oz.
Biggest fish story goes to Cory Heid who missed a fish that was initially thought to be a few pounds but was later reported to be larger than the the 23 pound fish that was at the cleaning station.
Everyone went home with salmon for the grill.
Per popular request we will be working on a date for grilled fish after practice one night this summer.
Registration and payment is due this week. The camp is July 4-10 and costs each student $200. Transportation, food, and Brewer ticket orders need to made. Call Coach Matczak if you need an extension on payment 759-9779.

Because of the
shortened class schedule tomorrow and the need to hit the road due to an earlier
weigh in this year, we will not be having a band send-off for Individual State (2/26). I have asked
some administrators to come down to the athletic area to see the kids off at
8:30 and we will be taking pictures, we will get a police escort to the city
limits if the weather cooperates and the roads are not slick. Feel free to come to the high school and see the Individual State qualifiers off.

Next Friday (3/6, Team State) we will go
all out with the band for a 9:30 team send off in the

Wisconsin Badger coach Barry Davis addresses about 50 wrestlers, parents and coaches from the Kaukauna youth, middle, and high school teams on Sunday, February 8 following the Badgers dual meet against Illinois at the UW-Fieldhouse. Davis spoke to the team about attacking from the neutral position, adjusting to new challenges, and seeking out good competition to improve. The Badgers split the ten matches against the Illinini, but unfortunately lost on bonus points 24-16. Nevertheless, the group had a great time, and looks forward to making a Badger match an annual event.
